Laissez-faire: Sneakercon 2013
Scanning the hardwood floor at Basketball City where NYC Sneakercon 2013 was held, I could see some of the most iconic sneakers to have ever touched pavement. With an array of vintage kicks, Sneakercon met my expectations of a free trade environment where transactions and bartering in every shape and form took place. Amidst duck-walking enthusiasts (you know,to prevent creases) and parents supportive of their child’s passion in collecting sneakers, I could not help it think how things have changed so drastically within a span of about 20 years. Back when stamp collecting or even trading of basketball cards was the norm during childhood, it is now sneakers that can be worth a new bicycle. I highly doubt Nike, Reebok and Adidas could have ever conceived where their sneaker designs would transcend into connoisseurship.
Aside from the youth that attended, there were adults who grew up during a time when Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Shawn Kemp, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley and Larry Johnson all played at their prime and as a results got their sneaker endorsements. The aim of my visit was to not capture sneakers but rather the sneakerheads who are deeply passionate about amassing their collection.
